HLF MSR LLC was founded in Salt Lake City on a simple observation: most technology failures are not technical. They are failures of specification, documentation, and honest communication. We built a practice around fixing those first.
Our Story
The firm began with a pattern we kept encountering in the field: organizations surrounded by capable tools, yet unable to make them work together. Expensive platforms sat half-configured. Integrations were held together by a single engineer who knew where the bodies were buried. Documentation, when it existed at all, described systems three versions out of date. The technology was rarely the problem — the absence of craft around it was.
HLF MSR LLC was formed to supply that craft. From our office at 343 S 500 E in Salt Lake City, we took on the unglamorous work that determines whether systems succeed: precise requirements, honest architecture, careful migration, and documentation written for the people who will inherit the system, not for the people who built it.
Over the years the practice has grown across healthcare, financial services, logistics, manufacturing, retail, and the public sector — but the working model has stayed deliberately small. Every engagement is led by a senior practitioner. Nothing is handed down a chain of juniors. When you call, you reach the person doing the work.
We chose the editorial metaphor on purpose. A good book is coherent because someone edited it — cut what did not belong, ordered what remained, and checked every reference. Systems deserve the same treatment. That is the standard this firm holds itself to, on every page of every engagement.

Precision before speed
A requirement stated precisely is half solved. We would rather spend a week sharpening the problem statement than a month building the wrong thing quickly.

Write it down
Decisions, assumptions, risks, and interfaces are recorded in plain language. Oral agreements and tribal knowledge are treated as defects, not conveniences.

Our advice is bought, not influenced. We hold no resale quotas and accept no vendor incentives, so a recommendation from HLF MSR means exactly one thing: we believe it is right for you.

Leave it operable
A system that only its builders can run is a liability. Training, runbooks, and handover verification are part of the definition of done on every project.

Candor over comfort
If a project should be stopped, descoped, or not started at all, we say so — early, in writing, with reasons. Clients hire us for judgment, and judgment includes the word no.
The Way We Work
Five stages, in order, every time. The sequence is the quality control.
Survey
We study the current state firsthand: systems, data flows, constraints, contracts, and the people who depend on each. The survey is delivered as a written record, and it frequently surprises even long-tenured staff.
Design
Target architecture, integration contracts, and a migration path — each decision recorded with its rationale and its alternatives. Stakeholders review the design before a line of production code is written.
Build
Short, observable increments with tests, runbooks, and integration notes attached. Progress is demonstrated, not asserted, and every increment is reversible.
Verify
We test against the original survey: performance under load, security posture, failover behavior, and the edge cases that only appear at inconvenient hours. Findings are fixed before handover, not after.
Hand Over
Documentation finalized, staff trained, support transition completed. The engagement closes when your team can operate the system without us — and we confirm that in practice, not on paper alone.
